Investing in nutrition for a sustainable future: current impact and future focus of the EU

Aid and Development
Date: Tuesday, 04 December 2018 09:00 - 12:00

Venue: European Parliament, room ASP 5E-2

Access to quality and inclusive education, health services, nutrition and social protection, are central to lifting people out of poverty and reducing inequalities. Yet decades of underinvestment in these areas have led to growing inequalities among and within countries. The EU is currently renegotiating its 7-year Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2021-2027 and redefining its relations with ACP countries post 2020. Focus on domestic resource mobilization, innovative financing and mobilizing private sector investments is dominating the international cooperation agenda.

With a strong EU commitment to reduce stunting by 7 million children under five by 2025 with €3.5 billion in 2014-2020 period, what has been achieved and how will investments be made in the next period? Will the EU invest in ending all forms of malnutrition? What is the role of the private sector in ending malnutrition? How do new initiatives like the EU External Investment Plan play a role in ending malnutrition?

Generation Nutrition, a coalition of NGOs working to fight malnutrition, is organising a high-level nutrition event in the European Parliament, given the strong engagement of the EP on the issue. The event aims to take stock of the impact made so far by the EU in its action fighting malnutrition and pave the way for renewed momentum and new commitments after 2020.

Registrations close on 27 November.
