One Health to Keep Antibiotics Working

For EAAD 2018 ECDC will host the event “One Health to Keep Antibiotics Working” where ECDC will present the latest estimates of the health burden of antibiotic resistance, and the new data on the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections and of antimicrobial consumption in acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities in the EU/EEA.

ECDC, in coordination with the European Commission, organises an EU-level launch event marking the 11th European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD). It will take place on Thursday 15 November from 09:00 to 13:00 at the Residence Palace in Brussels.

For EAAD 2018, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), in cooperation with the European Commission, will host an EU-level event titled “One Health to Keep Antibiotics Working”. The event, moderated by Kate Kelland (Reuters), will open with a keynote speech by the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, and will feature contributions by:

  • Dr Andrea Ammon, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control: antibiotic resistance and healthcare-associated infections in Europe: needs for improvement in healthcare settings.
  • Dr Nedret Emiroglu, World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe: progress of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance and the World Antibiotic Awareness Week.
  • Ms Francesca Colombo, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development: Stemming the superbug tide – just a few dollars more.
  • Dr Cornelius Schmaltz, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission: EU investment in the development of new tools & solutions to tackle antibiotic resistance.
  • Ms Nicola Holsten, DG Agriculture and Rural Development, European Commission: the Common Agriculture Policy and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Marie-Cécile Ploy, Joint Action on antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections (EU-JAMRAI): EU countries’ commitment to keep antibiotics working.

On this occasion, ECDC will present the latest estimates of the health burden of antibiotic resistance, and the new data on the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections and of antimicrobial consumption in acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities in the EU/EEA.

The event will be web streamed on ECDC’s YouTube channel and on EAAD’s Facebook page. ECDC will tweet live, and invites everyone to join by sending questions using the hashtag #EAAD.
