The Right to Education: How Can We Improve It?

Human Rights
Date: Tuesday, 04 December 2018 18:00 - 20:00

Venue: The Library Ambiorix

This December 10th, will be the 71st anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As part of this celebration of equal respect of human lives, World Solidarity Forum (WSF) wants to highlight a key part of the future of any society aspiring to these high ideals, education.

The period between 2000 to 2015 saw a huge deployment of proeducation campaigns worldwide. This was followed by shift towards concretely ensuring the education provided was not only accessible but also of high quality. Still today, a recent Human Rights Watch report stated that more than 100 million children remain out of school. Some of the most prominent reasons cited in the report pointed clearly at the long distances separating children from their closest school, unaffordable fees, entrenched social attitudes against girls having a right to learn or just children having no choice but to drop out from school because they have to work and contribute to their struggling families. This structural weaknesses also go alongside direct attacks against education itself. Save the Children reported that the violence directed at students, educators and their institutions has drastically increased worldwide between January 2013 and December 2017, education as a right has become a legitimate target for violence.

In the year of this 71st anniversary, WSF wants to invite you to discuss the importance of an accessible and quality education for all. A debate aiming to understand what can be done better to help reinforce a right with a fundamental capacity to create a better future for all.

Join us for a roundtable discussion on Tuesday December 4th at the Library Ambiorix!
