Civil society for the digital age

Civil Society
Date: Tuesday, 04 December 2018 17:00 - 19:00

Venue: BRUEGEL, RUE DE LA CHARITÉ 33, 1210 BRUSSELS

This event focuses on the place of civil society in the digital age as well as the role of technology in society. We will discuss how marketplaces should be designed to achieve high social welfare gains and how these gains should be allocated among the market participants. We will also shed a light on the roles and responsibilities of internet users, digital platforms and authorities and unions in this future digital civil society.

Glen Weyl (Microsoft Research New York and Princeton University) will present his co-authored paper A Blueprint for a Better Digital Societywhich provides a radical perspective of how the digital ecosystem should be reformed to maximize civil society’s gains. The background of this perspective is based on his book Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society which proposes that data should be treated as labor and online users should receive monetary transfers for the data they provide to digital platforms.

In the panel discussion that will follow we will analyse the implications of such a perspective on the business models of digital platforms, privacy regulation, competition law and the formation of organizations/unions with primary objective to manage transactions based on data.

This event will be livestreamed. There is no need to register for the livestream.
