ECIPE Seminar: Global Economic Governance in Times of Economic Nationalism - Can it Survive?

Trade
Date: Tuesday, 04 December 2018 15:00 - 16:30

Venue: ECIPE Office, Avenue des Arts 40, 6th floor, 1040 Brussels

Geopolitical shifts are leading to a redesign of the globalized economic order that has flourished in the post-Cold War period. This trend runs deeper than the trade wars being waged between the US and China. Ultimately, it raises structural questions such as the struggle between economic models, the competition for technological leadership as well as control over physical and digital connectivity. It seems to be a new game, played under different rules, particularly by a logic that merges economic with strategic considerations.

  • What impact can this trend produce over the rules and institutions that have so far organized the global economy?

  • Is the world bound to sleepwalk toward a fragmented global economic order?

  • Or are third actors – such as the EU – in a position to lead a defense of a global system that continues to provide predictability, as has been proposed at the WTO?

Please join us for a discussion on the Global Economic Governance.

Speakers:

Denis Redonnet, Director for WTO, Legal Affairs and Trade in Goods, DG-TRADE, European Commission.

Elena Lazarou, European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS).

Henrique Choer Moraes, Diplomat at the Mission of Brazil to the EU (Trade/Investment and Strategic Planning).

Ricardo Borges de Castro, Adviser on Strategic Foresight to the European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC).
