Politics as Theatre in Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition

Education and Culture
Date: Thursday, 14 February 2019 13:00 - 15:00

Venue: Brussels School of International Studies, University of Kent

As interpretations of the Arab Spring have drawn on the political theories of Hannah Arendt, this lecture explores how Arendt arrives at her rehabilitation of the political sphere through a notion of what has become known as ‘the performative’. Given that the popular expression of the Arab Spring took poetic forms, the lecture attends to Arendt’s bracketing off the poetic in favour of the political.

Caroline Rooney is Professor of African and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Kent. Her work explores the differences between radicalism and extremism through the arts and popular culture.
