The Coming of Age of a Monetary Union

Economic, Financial, and Banking Affairs
Date: Tuesday, 12 February 2019

Venue: Franz Palm Lecture Hall

The Eurozone crisis started to unfold in the European Union from 2009 onwards. Several Eurozone member states were unable to repay or refinance their government debt or to bail out over-indebted banks. The financial markets were panicking and Europe was on the verge of a disaster.

Former President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, attended all the meetings in search of solutions. In this lecture, he will look back on this crisis, starting with the establishment of the Euro in Maastricht in 1992. He will then go into the run-up to the financial crisis, the crisis itself and the measures that were taken to prevent a total breakdown, with Greece leaving the Union. Finally, he will indicate how the future might look - or should look.
