Ensuring humanitarian-development connectedness: Collective outcomes, what does it mean?

Human Rights
Date: Monday, 06 May 2019 14:00 - 18:00

Venue: Mundo B (Rue d'Edimbourg 26, Brussels)

The volume, cost and length of humanitarian assistance due to the protracted nature of crises has given new urgency to the long-standing discussion around better connectedness between humanitarian and development efforts. At the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) the need to strengthen the humanitarian-development nexus and to overcome long-standing attitudinal, institutional and funding obstacles were identified. The Commitment to Action signed at the WHS specifically calls for the pursuit of collective outcomes across silos for preventing crises and sustainably reducing people’s levels of humanitarian need. Despite new concepts like the New Way of Working or the Nexus it is not clear what does really mean to work collaboratively towards collective outcomes. For example, how to define a collective outcome for protection? Moreover, what different organizations understand by collective outcomes is not clear. In this context the aim of the roundtable is to discuss what these concepts mean and how they can be operationalised on the ground. With this aim the conversation will offer an opportunity to share experiences, stimulate joint learning and contribute to the international debate towards the definition of common intervention strategies.
