The Fitness Check on the EU Legislation on Legal Migration

On 29 March 2019 the Fitness Check on the EU Legislation on Legal Migration was adopted by the EU Commission. The purpose of this Fitness Check was to evaluate and assess the existing EU legislation on legal migration based on the following five evaluation criteria: Relevance, Coherence, Effectiveness, Efficiency and EU added value. The Fitness Check aimed at identifying gaps and inconsistencies and consider possible ways of simplifying and streamlining the current EU framework in order to contribute to a better management of legal migration flows. The Fitness Check covers the following Legal Migration Directives: Family reunification Directive (2003/86/EC), Long-Term Residents Directive (2003/109/EC), EU Blue Card Directive (2009/50/EC), Single Permit Directive (2011/98/EU)Seasonal Workers Directive (2014/36/EU)Intra-Corporate Transferees Directive (2014/66/EU), Students and Researchers Directive (EU) 2016/801.

On the 11th of July, Mr. Silvio Grecio, policy officer at DG migration and home affairs (EU Commission) who participated in the drafting of the Fitness Check Communication, will give an overview of the main developments of the Fitness Check, and will provide his personal comments based on his numerous years in the field at the EU Commission.
