Nature Friendly Farming: Transforming the CAP for Nature and People

Agriculture and Rural Development
Date: Monday, 09 September 2019 10:00

Venue: Representation of the Region of North-Rhine-Westphalia

The state of nature is dire: One million species are facing extinction during the next decades as recently stated in the new report of the International Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The current loss of biodiversity is as severe as the climate crisis. Both are intertwined and threaten world food security. The intensification of farming practices is one of the main drivers of the loss of species and habitats and is one of the largest threats to agriculture itself.

The new Common Agricultural Policy must transform our current intensive agricultural farming system towards nature friendly farming and the new European Parliament has to be at the forefront. The outgoing parliament has failed to find a common position and has been deeply divided over the level of the future environmental ambition. Now, the newly elected MEPs will have to pick up this conflict and find an answer to these questions: How will the environmental crisis affect agriculture in Europe? What different farm models can help reconcile agriculture and nature? How can European policy support these solutions?

The event will bring together farmers, civil society and representatives of the European Institutions, who will discuss these questions and how European agriculture can achieve the transition to sustainable food systems that support nature and people.
