Folic acid and neural tube defects – What should the EU do?

Date: Tuesday, 05 November 2019

Venue: European Parliament

IF organises an event on “Folic acid and neural tube defects – What should the EU do?” that will be hosted by MEP Petra de Sutter (Greens/EFA, Belgium).

Every pregnancy is potentially at risk from being affected by a Neural Tube Defect (NTD). In the majority of pregnancies this could be prevented with simple primary prevention measures, and folic acid is key to that.

However, there still exists a lack of understanding about folic acid: what it is, how to get it, how much to take and most importantly the need to take it before getting pregnant.

The objectives of the event are: to address the well-documented gap in women’s knowledge on preconception, on prenatal health, to raise awareness about the importance of folic acid especially among women of childbearing age and to launch a debate on food fortification. Mandatory food fortification is the way of maximising the consumption of folic acid in the entire population. Despite this fact, some countries are still either not fortifying with folic acid, or only fortify selected products on a voluntary basis.

If you wish to attend the event, registration is mandatory. Please register by 28 October 2019.
