DESCRIPTION

The Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the EU, in cooperation with Gasunie and TenneT, is pleased to invite you to a high-level event on the role of infrastructure in the energy transition towards a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.

Momentum builds in Europe for a 2050 climate-neutrality goal, to which the Netherlands is highly committed. The energy sector plays a key role to meet this target. In order to ensure a climate-neutral energy supply that remains resilient, secure and safe, we need to undertake significant investments in our energy infrastructure.

New technologies for sector coupling and sector integration and energy carriers such as renewable hydrogen are key to securing a cost-effective energy transition towards a carbon-neutral economy. To reach this potential we must make use of the existing EU energy infrastructure, integrating different energy vectors in a seamless manner.

We will present takeaways from the Dutch Climate Agreement debate as well as from an analytical work on decarbonisation pathways carried out by Gasunie and TenneT, before discussing challenges and approaches to decarbonising Europe’s energy system.
