From COAL to STEEL: responsible mining and sustainable steel

Industry, Enterprise and Innovation
Date: Wednesday, 27 June 2018 01:30 - 06:00

Venue: Bibliothèque Solvay, Rue Belliard 137, 1000 Bruxelles  |  City: Brussel, Belgium

The  aim of the this conference is to initiate a discussion on the future of steel industry in the EU and on a global level. In connection with the transformation towards a low-emission economy in the coming years, along with the demand for e.g.electric cars and windmills, the demand for steel will also increase.

Coking coal, currently listed as one of the 27 critical raw materials for the EU, is an essential ingredient for steel production. Its domestic EU production in 2017 was 17 mt, while the total import was 38 mt. Taking into account the increasing demand for steel, the importance of a reliable supply of coking coal will be crutial. Furthermmore, the coke-making ans steel industry are making constant effforts to meet the requirements of the climate policy, which would be impossible without a strong R&D base.

Innovations, not only are the key solutions for further emissions reductions, but can aslo contribute to the global energy transition. Therefore, the industry is closely involved in development of new technologies like: tar processing, hydrogen separation and usage, or CCU.

With the more rigorous environmental standards and expected increase in emissions allowances price, related to the EU ETS Directive revision, and even stronger impact on the competitiveness of the European steel industry is expected. Considering efforts made so far to reduce emission in the steel sector, it is crucial to develop a strategy to ensure a global level playing field.
