Just Transition not just a transition! Debate on the challenges associated with the transformation of local economies in coal mining regions in the EU

Energy, Environment and Climate
Date: Thursday, 21 June 2018 15:30 - 17:30

Venue: : European Parliament, JAN Room 6Q1

The recent developments in European environmental legislation (ETS reform, Industrial Emissions Directive, new Large Combustion Plants Best Reference Document etc.) in conjunction with the progress made in renewables and energy storage technologies are already contributing to the reduction of coal’s share in the EU’s electricity mix.  The commitment of the European Union to the Paris Agreement and the leadership role the EU strives to have in global climate policy ensure that this path is irreversible and that a gradual phase-out of coal is an inevitable reality.

This imminent energy transition must be accompanied by a comprehensive Just Transition strategy, aiming to minimise hardship for workers and their communities in the associated industries through active political and financial support, as well as shifting local economies towards sustainable economic activities.

Globe and WWF are inviting Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission, of municipalities in coal regions, and of trade unions, to discuss best practices and transition plans for specific regions and the necessity to shift EU funds to support Just Transition in line with the EU policies related to climate, energy and regional development.
