The EU’s vision for a modern, clean economy - Stakeholder event

Energy, Environment and Climate
Date: Tuesday, 10 July 2018 10:00 - Wednesday, 11 July 2018 17:00

Venue: Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)  |  City: Brussel, Belgium

This stakeholder event provides an opportunity for discussion on a long-term EU strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building a modern, clean economy.

In March 2018, EU leaders asked the European Commission to present, within 12 months, “a proposal for a Strategy for long-term EU greenhouse gas emissions reduction in accordance with the Paris Agreement”. This followed a similar request form the European Parliament.

In preparation for this proposal for a mid-century low carbon emissions strategy, the Commission will carry out a public consultation in the summer of 2018, seeking input from citizens and stakeholders on the EU’s long-term strategy.

In this context, the Commission is organising a 2-day stakeholder event in Brussels on 10-11 July for up to 1000 participants, bringing together a broad range of stakeholders from business, research and civil society.

The Conference will take place at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), 42 Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, 1050 Brussels.

Hosted by Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, the event will offer an opportunity for discussions that will then feed in to the Commission’s deliberations for the strategy.

"Ambitious long-term strategies are central to achieving the Paris Agreement goals and preventing some of the worst impacts of climate change. The EU is committed to doing its part. For us, the question is not if but how and when we can make our society ready to do this. The clean energy transition will be key, and achieving our climate objectives will require contributions from every part of the economy – industry, business, farming and forestry – and from us all as individual citizens. This conference will be a vital forum for discussions and opinions that will feed into the forthcoming new EU long-term strategy on reducing emissions."

- Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy
