Education and Culture
Date: Tuesday, 25 September 2018 14:30 - 17:00

Venue: European Committee of the Regions  |  City: Brussel

Open working session about plurilingualism, intercultural understanding and promotion of minority and regional languages

As expressed by the Council of Europe, the general objectives of the European Day of Languages (26 September) are:

  • Alerting the public to the importance of language learning and diversifying the range of languages learnt in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding;
  • Promoting the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, which must be preserved and fostered;
  • Encouraging lifelong language learning in and out of school, whether for study purposes, for professional needs, for purposes of mobility or for pleasure and exchanges.

Language diversity is one of the milestones of the EU. The working session trends to alert the public to the importance of language learning and diversifying the range of languages learnt in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding, including the promotion of minority languages. The workshop will analyse successful multilingualism policies, as they can strengthen the life chances of citizens: it may increase their employability, facilitate access to services and rights, and contribute to solidarity through enhanced intercultural dialogue and social cohesion.
