How to overcome the barriers to research in chronic NCDs in Europe? The case of allergy and asthma

Date: Tuesday, 09 October 2018 15:00 - 17:00

Venue: European Parliament, Room A5G305

We are delighted to invite you to a policy meeting organised by the Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma on Tuesday 9 October 2018 at 15:00-17:00 in the European Parliament, Brussels.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the most common cause of mortality and disability worldwide. As chronic diseases, they usually last a lifetime. Asthma and allergies are amongst the most prevalent NCDs, affecting more than 150 million people in Europe.
• 70 million Europeans have asthma
• 100 million Europeans suffer from allergic rhinitis
• 7 million Europeans live with a food allergy
In the past decades, the prevalence of allergy and asthma has grown to alarming proportions, in conjunction with rising environmental challenges such as air pollution and climate change, with important socio-economic consequences for our healthcare systems and societies.

On 9 October, Members of the European Parliament, European Commission representatives, European medical societies, and patient organisations representing people with allergies and airways diseases in Europe will discuss EU action on research on chronic NCDs with a focus on allergy and asthma. The meeting will discuss how to drive improvements, better understanding of these diseases and the development of better treatments, in the context of the debates on the next EU research and innovation framework programme (Horizon Europe).
