The Philippines' Foreign Policy Under President Duterte

Foreign policy, Security and Defence
Date: Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:30 - 18:00

Venue: Asia Plaform, 10th floor  |  City: Bruxelles

Given its geostrategic positioning at the parameters of the Asian continent and in the heart of the South China Sea, the foreign policy of the Philippines has long been a point of truly global importance and interest. A long-time treaty ally of the USA, under the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines has shifted its foreign policy agenda along more pragmatic lines, increasingly willing to engage non-traditional partners and carve out its own path in global affairs. Under President Duterte, this astute approach to international relations has also been encouraged on the regional level. Throughout its 2017 chairmanship of ASEAN, the Philippines urged a regional shift in policy in order to better engage with the new challenges and opportunities resulting from a changing geo-political order.

Throughout Duterte’s time in power, the Philippines has further established itself as a popular destination for global investment. Last year, FDI into the Philippines reached a record high of USD 10 billion, with the archipelago nation being identified by U.S. News as the best country to invest in in 2018. This is certainly promising news to both the Philippines and European investors, for whom the Philippines’ booming semiconductor and electronics industries represent fertile ground for future collaboration.

Given its promising economic future and innovative approach to global affairs, the Philippines is certain to hold the world’s attention for many years to come.
