Optimism - building for Europe! A European House of Citizens?

Education and Culture
Date: Friday, 01 September 2017 09:30

Venue: Maison Des Associations Internationales  |  City: Ixelles, Belgium

The invisibility of the European Union in Brussels epitomizes the difficulty of the EU to create a strong identity for its citizens to identify with and be proud of. But the turmoil currently agitating the EU can be seen as an opportunity for a shift in posture: now could be the time for Europe to become visible.

European citizenship is not just about law and politics, it also needs symbols – which is where the architects must come in. Just like other professionals they may well have concerns about the state Europe is in and how to bridge the gap between a still grey, distant and institutional seeming Brussels and the citizen. Among all the prestigious buildings for Eurocrats, lobbies and “stakeholders”, where do citizens find their own home? To answer this question we are inviting people from Brussels to a dialogue with proponents of different ideas/schemes. And to respond to many questions such as how create a citizens house for citizens by citizens? Should such a welcoming structure be available only in Brussels or from anywhere across Europe? What would be on offer?

Starting next September, An Fonteyne, along with her architecture students of ETH Zurich, will investigate whether and how architecture can assist in this process. Her students will therefore be asked to design a building for Europe, or rather for its citizens: a place for culture, for citizenship, a place of gathering, of learning, participation and demonstration. Priscilla Moreira will introduce the discussion.

The aim of this workshop will be to collectively discuss what the focus and program of such an institution could be to make this building worth building.
