ECIPE Seminar: Ideas, interests, inequality - what is driving the support for economic nationalism?

Institutional and Political Issues
Date: Tuesday, 19 September 2017 10:00 - 11:30

Venue: ECIPE Office, Avenue des Arts 40, 6th floor, 1040 Brussels

The election of Donald Trump is not the only manifestation of nationalism and populism being on the rise in global politics. In recent years, the whole Western world has experienced growing populist movements that feed on nationalist or extreme ideologies on the Left or the Right. But are the strengths of anti-establishment movements abating – or are they here to stay, with a potential to grow even more? And, if so, what is fueling the current political anger that has driven all too many people into the hands of the extremes and the nationalist?

Andreas Freytag, Senior Fellow of ECIPE, Professor of Economics at the University of Jena and Director of Tutwa Consulting will present some of his research and thoughts about populism.

Shada Islam, Director of Policy at Friends of Europe, will provide her view on how to fight populism and euroscepticism in the current times.

The seminar will be moderated by Juliane Schmidt, Junior Policy Analyst at EPC.
