Home affairs, Migration and Integration
Date: Monday, 09 October 2017 18:00 - 19:30

Venue: Institute for Europeam Studies, Room Rome, Floor -1  |  City: Ixelles, Belgium

  • Public lecture by Prof. Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen, University of Copenhagen
  • Introduction by Dr. Jan Claudius Völkel, Institute for European Studies, VUB

Traditionally marginal on Arab television, within the last twenty years Islamic subjects, preachers and programs have come to great prominence. This coincides with the proliferation of satellite television and thus the re-integration of Arabs in Europe into a pan-Arab public sphere.

This talk will sketch the historical development of Islamic TV programming, provide an overview of channels and program formats today, and discuss its significance to Muslims in Europe.

Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen is Professor of Islamic and Arabic Studies at the University of Copenhagen. His field of research is contemporary Islam, more specifically the establishment of a modern Muslim public sphere, and the role of the Muslim ulama in modern Arab states. Lately, his research has primarily focused on the role of Islam in the new pan-Arab television networks.

Key publications include:

  • Defining Islam for the Egyptian State – Muftis and Fatwas of the Dār al-Iftā, Leiden: Brill, 1997.
  • Middle Eastern Cities 1900-1950: Public Spheres and Public Places in Transformation (co-edited with Hans Christian Nielsen), AUP, 2001.
