EU-China Education Cooperation: Broadening the Scope

The 4th EU-China High Level People-to-People Dialogue was held in mid-November in Shanghai, focusing on education, culture, gender equality, youth and sport. Education has been an increasingly focal point of EU-China cooperation following the adoption of the "Joint Communication on Elements for a new EU strategy on China". On 11 October 2016 the first China-EU Education Ministers Conference took place in Beijing, with the Sino-Europe Forum on Education Policy Think Tanks held in the margins.

But cooperation can be tracked back earlier in time. More than 20 years ago, on 13 April 1995, the Sichuan Province and Brussels-Capital Region signed the Brussels-Sichuan Agreement of Cooperation, covering vocational training, student exchange programmes and culture. The Brussels Region cooperates with Sichuan and Chengdu research institutes and universities in many different disciplines and is eager to expand further the scope of its collaboration with Sichuan partners.

Also in Brussels and Belgium, the Freinet educational pedagogy is becoming a new educational success story and there is a lot of interest and potential to introduce this educational model in Sichuan and Chengdu.

Furthermore, in the Brussels Capital Region, there are currently three Confucius Institutes.  In 2014, a milestone was reached with the establishment of the Brussels Academy for China-European Studies (BACES), an educational collaboration between the Renmin University of China, Sichuan University, Fudan University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).  The BACES is a platform for exchanging academic ideas, for promoting understanding between Chinese and European people, and is established in the framework of the China-EU High Level People-to-People Dialogue.
