EIB Investment in Education outside the EU

Education and Culture
Date: Wednesday, 13 December 2017

Venue: EIB Brussels Office, Brussels  |  City: Brussel, Belgium

The EIB invests in emerging economies to help them diversify and integrate into global systems as they move towards increased prosperity. To do this, our partner countries need to create decent jobs for the young generation which is emerging, and need to support the empowerment of those young men and women through education and adequate opportunities.

At this workshop in our Brussels office on Wednesday 13 December, we will explore different ways we can provide finance for education outside the EU. These include direct support of universities, as well as co-financing of education institutions through investment funds, and providing credit lines to local banks that would on-lend to universities. We will hear from Didier Bosman, Senior Engineer of the Education and Public Research Division at the EIB, who will explain how the EIB supports the sector.

In addition we will welcome Lorna Li, Fund Manager of the Higher Education Finance Fund, who will tell us how the HEFF enables broader access to higher education for people living in poverty through the provision of innovative microfinance products.

We will hear from the Co-Operative Bank of Kenya’s Corporate Banking Chief Manager, Jackie Waithaka, whose financial institution has invested in the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, whose University Librarian, Prof. Joseph Kavulya is also joining us.

Finally we will learn about the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes’ project (EMUF), thanks to Kenza Zerrou Ouazzani, Cooperation and International Relations Manager at the EMUF.

A sandwich lunch will be provided ahead of the event, and a networking coffee will take place afterwards.
