Overview of The Copyright Directive with Rapporteur Axel Voss MEP

Data protection
Date: Tuesday, 20 February 2018 12:30 - 14:00

Venue: British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium  |  City: Brussel, Belgium

Since taking over the lead on the copyright reform from Therese Comodini Cachia, Axel Voss has distanced himself from her efforts and reverted to supporting the Commission’s proposals. This includes the contested articles on “censorship machines” for file uploads, an extra copyright for news sites and the very limited scope of a proposed text and data mining exception. The JURI committee is scheduled to vote on the amendments in late March. Axel Voss will lead us through the report at this lunch briefing.

Axel Voss is a trained lawyer, lecturer and current MEP. Upon re-election as the Member of the European Parliament in 2014, Mr. Voss became a Vice-Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs. He gave up the Vice-Chair in the Committee on Legal Affairs to become Coordinator for the EPP Group in January 2017. He is substitute member in the Committee of Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs; and furthermore was appointed Vice-Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Australia and New Zealand. Already during his first legislative term as MEP (2009-2014), the European Data Protection Package was a crucial element of his parliamentary work. He further focuses on the PNR dossiers, the NSA Inquiry Committee and European criminal law as well as EU relevant judiciary topics.
