Mainstreaming Gender in Security and Defence Policy Shaping

Institutional and Political Issues
Date: Thursday, 01 February 2018 19:00 - 21:00

Venue: Nordic House (1st floor)  |  City: Bruxelles, Belgium

Saab and YPFP brings you an exciting debate providing you with an in-depth insight into gender mainstreaming in security and defence policy. Gender mainstreaming is a process with the objective to achieve gender equality by integrating gender perspectives into all policy activities. Its approach is to address the gender challenges and implications that women and men face in the design and implementation of any planned policy action. It integrates different and unique gender perspectives to develop a diverse and equal workforce.

The adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security has made significant progress in integrating gender perspectives and women in military operations. Today, women engage in a significant role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding and in the armed forces. However, there is much more drastic need for improvement particularly on gender integrated planning and implementation of defence policies and missions as well as gender balancing in civilian and military operations. The event will explore the following key issues:

How do you mainstream gender issues in the field of security and defence in terms of policy formulation?
What are the challenges and opportunities in gender mainstreaming in CSDP missions and operations?
How do we formulate actionable policy recommendations that would elevate women into key military leadership positions?
Speakers

James Collins, Humanitarian Advisor, NATO SHAPE
Clare Hutchinson, Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, NATO
Charlotte Isaksson, Senior Gender Advisor, European External Action Service
Join us on the 1st February to discuss these issues and seize the opportunity to actively exchange your ideas with senior subject-matter experts.
