Antibiotic resistance: Preventing a crisis

Health
Date: Tuesday, 10 April 2018 18:30 - 21:00

City: Brussels, Belgium

Seventy-five years ago, antibiotics were the wonder drugs of the age; today, they are the worry drugs. Through over-use, antibiotics have prompted many bacteria to develop resistance to them – so much so that, a UK review panel estimated, about 700,000 people a year die due antibiotic-resistant disease around the world. In response, we have made a little progress in controlling antibiotic overuse in farming; but the innovation pipeline of new antibiotics is worryingly small. At this rate, EU Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis recently warned, “we face a frightening future where routine surgery, childbirth, pneumonia and even skin infections could once again become life threatening.”

How do we get the R&D pipeline flowing faster? What programmes, policies and strategies could the EU now adopt? This Science|Business dinner debate will gather latest information on the problem, and brainstorm for new solutions.

The event will take place on 10 April 2018, from 18:30 to 21:00.
