ECIPE Seminar: Globalization and Consumers – Estimating the Gains of Trade for Households

Trade
Date: Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:30 - 12:00

Venue: ECIPE Office, Avenue des Arts 40, 6th floor, 1040 Brussels  |  City: Bruxelles, Belgium

What’s been the main economic effect of globalization? Many will point to lower consumer prices as one of its most tangible consequence. The gradual reduction in barriers to trade and investment over the past decades have opened up markets for more competition, and just as economic theory holds, the effects on production scale and specialization have been visible everywhere. While critics argue that the liberalization of trade have had unwanted effects, few challenge the notion that it has given consumers “more bang for the buck”.

Please join us for a panel discussion on the consequences of globalization for consumers that will feature new studies estimating the consumers gains from trade.

Speakers:

Lucian Cernat, Chief Economist, European Commission’s DG Trade

Monique Goyens, Director General of BEUC – The European Consumer Organisation

Fredrik Erixon, Director, ECIPE
