The Challenges and Solutions for Middle-Income Regions within the EU Cohesion Policy beyond 2020

Home affairs, Migration and Integration
Date: Thursday, 19 April 2018 12:30 - 14:30

Venue: CEPS Conference Room  |  City: Brussel, Belgium

The weaker labour market performance of refugees compared to other immigrants in the EU, even when controlling for age, gender and education, has been well-documented. Part of the explanation can arise from the reality that refugees, on average, encounter more restrictive regulations and higher uncertainty than other immigrants. To what extent, then, do asylum policies at the time of refugees’ arrival in their destination country explain their slow labour market integration?

Francesco Fasani, Associate Professor in Economics at Queen Mary University of London, will present the findings of his recent research “(The Struggle for) Refugee Integration into the Labour Market: Evidence from Europe”. His study, in particular, evaluates how refugee dispersal (mandatory settlement) policies and uncertainty in the asylum process influence refugees' subsequent labour market integration.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion of the possible lessons for the EU and national policymakers.

Participation in this event is exceptionally free of charge
