The question of the importance and role of religion in the development of modern Europe has fuelled the debates on European identity and core values ever since.

“Culture,” wrote sociologist Daniel Bell “is the effort to provide a coherent set of answers to the existential predicaments that confront all human beings in the passage of their lives.” Today Europe is facing numerous current challenges that emphasize the extensive connections between politics, culture, as well as social and ethical issues. The general idea of secularism seems to be at odds with an increasingly political relevance of ethical questionings in numerous policy areas and in some cases even with the exercise of freedom of religion. If secularism is a synonym for freethought and modernity for some, for others it can only provide limited responses to those questions, because of its denial of spirituality or religiosity and transcendent definition of intrinsic worth.

We have the pleasure of inviting you to discuss with experts on the Strengths and Weaknesses of Secularism and Pluralism in the EU.
