LSE Alumni Association Belgium - The EU's Role In An Uncertain World

Foreign policy, Security and Defence
Date: Monday, 28 May 2018 18:30 - 20:30

Venue: ING Bruxelles Marnix Conference Centre, Rue Du Trone 1 (This is the entrance for conference attendants - do not use the entrance in Rue Marnix as it is used by ING's staff and clients)  |  City: Bruxelles, Belgium

In recent years global governance within institutions such as the UN, IMF, WTO, and G20 has come under increasing strain. Security, conflict, and migration issues in the European neighbourhood fill news reports on a daily basis. And further afield, the United States and China pose challenges to international trade. Yet these are also times of hope. Rising global prosperity and technological change contribute to poverty reduction, climate action, and sustainable development. Globalisation has also made people in many parts of the world safer and healthier than ever before.

What are the opportunities and challenges facing the European Union in this fast-changing environment? And how does and should it respond to them?

Join us for a keynote speech by Christian Leffler, LSE alumnus and Deputy Secretary General for Economic and Global Issues at the European Union External Action Service. He will offer his perspective on some of the international issues that drive debates across Europe and will lay out his vision on the European Union’s future role in an uncertain world.

The speech will be followed by a lively discussion with the audience, moderated by Nikos Chrysoloras, LSE alumnus and Head of the Bloomberg Brussels office.
The event will then conclude with a networking reception.
